Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi & Dev Deepawali

Some nights in India you plan an entire trip around without ever having seen them in person — only in a single photograph that never quite leaves you. Dev Deepawali is that night: the moment the Ganges itself seems to catch fire with a million small flames, and an ancient city walks, together, toward the river. We don’t just take you to see it. We make sure you’re standing in exactly the right place when it happens.

The Night a Million Lamps Meet the Ganges — A Moment International Travelers Plan Years Around

There’s a particular night in Varanasi that international travelers wait for, quite literally, for years — the night of Dev Deepawali, the “Diwali of the Gods.” This isn’t a festival most people stumble upon by accident. It’s a destination in itself, and once you’ve seen it described, or seen a single photograph of it, it tends to stay on a traveler’s list until they finally make the trip.

What makes it different from Diwali anywhere else in India — even in Rajasthan’s own beautiful celebrations — is where it happens. On this one night each year, every one of Varanasi’s ghats along the Ganges is lined with thousands upon thousands of earthen oil lamps, their warm, natural light reflecting off the river in a way no artificial light ever quite manages. Priests perform a grand Ganga Aarti amplified many times over, temple bells ring continuously, and the old city’s narrow stone lanes fill with people dressed in traditional Indian attire, moving toward the river as if the whole city is walking to the same place at once.

This isn’t a festival — not in the way most people picture that word. It’s a living tradition, thousands of years old, playing out in real time in front of you. Walking through Varanasi’s old streets on this particular night, past centuries-old temples and homes lit only by lamplight, and then arriving at the ghats to see the river itself glowing gold, is something photographs never quite prepare people for. It has to be witnessed, dressed the part, camera in hand, standing shoulder to shoulder with locals who have done this every year of their lives.

And whether you experience the golden triangle’s own festivities in a lit-up heritage resort in Rajasthan, or the far more intimate warmth of an evening with an Indian family lighting diyas together, our team takes real pride in making sure your Diwali season in India is not just seen, but felt. This itinerary brings both worlds together in one journey: the royal grandeur of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, and the singular, unrepeatable spiritual spectacle of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi.

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24th November — exactly fifteen days after the main Diwali (8th November), on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima. Hotel availability along the ghats fills quickly for this date each year, so early booking is strongly recommended.

HIGHLIGHTS

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi

A warm welcome at the airport and private transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, explore Old and New Delhi — Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, India Gate, and Humayun’s Tomb. Overnight in Delhi.

Day 2: Delhi to Varanasi (by flight)

Fly to Varanasi, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and the spiritual heart of India. In the evening, take a guided walk through the old city’s narrow lanes toward the ghats, arriving in time for the nightly Ganga Aarti — priests performing synchronized fire rituals to the sound of bells and chanting on the banks of the Ganges. Overnight in Varanasi.

Day 3: Varanasi — Sarnath & the Sacred City

Rise early for a boat ride on the Ganges at sunrise, watching pilgrims bathe and offer prayers as the city wakes up. Later, visit Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first teaching after enlightenment, home to the Dhamek Stupa and an archaeological museum. Spend the afternoon wandering Varanasi’s temples and old city lanes at a relaxed pace. Overnight in Varanasi.

Day 4: Dev Deepawali — The Night of a Million Lamps

The heart of this journey. As evening falls, dress in traditional Indian attire and walk through Varanasi’s old streets as the entire city makes its way to the river. Arrive at the ghats to witness thousands of earthen lamps lit in unison along the riverbank, their warm light reflected across the Ganges, alongside a grand, amplified Ganga Aarti performed for this one special night. This is Dev Deepawali — Varanasi’s own “Diwali of the Gods” — and it is, without exaggeration, unlike anything else in India. Overnight in Varanasi.

Day 5: Varanasi to Jaipur (by flight)

Fly to Jaipur, Rajasthan’s vibrant Pink City. Check in and spend the evening at leisure, taking in Jaipur’s own festive atmosphere and markets. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 6: Jaipur Sightseeing

Explore Amber Fort — by jeep or, for the classic postcard moment, by elephant to the gate — followed by City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and Jantar Mantar. Depending on your dates, this may also be your evening to celebrate in style — either at a beautifully illuminated heritage palace resort, or with an Indian family, lighting diyas and sharing a festive meal together. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 7: Jaipur to Agra

Drive to Agra, stopping en route at Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone Mughal city built and abandoned within decades. Arrive in Agra by evening and, if timing allows, watch the sunset over the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh, across the river. Overnight in Agra.

Day 8: Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, Departure via Delhi

An early start for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the marble turns soft shades of pink and gold. Visit Agra Fort before driving back to Delhi for your onward flight, bringing this journey — through royal India and its most luminous night — to a close.

Dream Day Tours Golden Triangle and Tiger Safari Tour is definitely worth booking! Review of Dream Day Tours - Golden Triangle plus Tiger Safari Tour This past June my wife and I traveled to India with one of my wife’s colleagues to visit her husband’s hometown in Assam, India. It was great seeing a part of India from the perspective of a family that lived there, but since this was my wife’s first time to India, we decided to book a tour to show her some other beautiful sites. And so, we booked a lovely tour through Dream Day Tours, which is based in Jaipur. It was called the Golden Triangle Tour with Tiger Safari. It was just the two of us on the tour, so Dream Day Tours catered everything to our needs and desires. To begin, we flew into Delhi and Dream Day arranged for a driver to bring us from the airport to the Welcomehotel by ITC in Dwarka. Excellent hotel with very good food. The next day, we started our tour with the driver that was assigned to us, Jeetu Singh. Jeetu was great and transported us to our various destinations for the entire tour. We were also provided with a local guide for Delhi, Aarif Sheikh. Aarif was an excellent guide. He gave us a lot of historical and cultural information and took us to Jama Masjid, which was a spectacular mosque built in the time of the Mughals in the 1600’s, and still used for prayer today. We also got a bicycle rickshaw ride in Chandni Chowk, which is a lively and colorful market nearby. We were also taken to a grand Sikh Temple and learned of the generosity of the Sikh’s to their pilgrims and temple visitors. We appreciated the visits to the monuments and museums that were made around the life and death of Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi. The next morning Jeetu brought us to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. We were met there by our guide Vipin. The Taj is spectacular, and basically was the only site we visited in Agra. Vipin brought us to various places to see the Taj under different views and at sunrise and sunset. We had total access to the Taj and its grounds, and Vipin, an amateur photographer took many beautiful and romantic photos of us with the Taj as a background. In fact, he took such a beautiful photo of us that we both use it as our most recent FB profile page. He definitely has talent as a photographer! On our way from Agra to Jaipur, Jeetu had us visit Fatehpur Sikri, which was the capital of the Mughal empire under Emperor Akbar in the 1500’s. This was certainly worth the visit. And we also stopped at a step well, which was a structure that was used historically to provide water to the inhabitants of the area. It was really different, fascinating, and ingenious! In Jaipur, the Pink City, we were again provided with a guide that was very versed in Indian culture and history, Mr. Raghuveer. He immediately brought us the Hawa Mahal, or Wind Palace, which is an incredibly beautiful structure overlooking a large busy square. We were again brought there by the Dream Day Tours owner, Ashfaq, in the evening, to see its beauty at night. Phenomenal! We had stressed that, besides seeing traditional tourist sites, we wanted to get an experience that showed us some of what really goes on in Jaipur streets, so Mr. Raghuveer took us to the flower market, where we were showered with flowers. This seemed especially appropriate for us since we had just celebrated our 40th anniversary. It was wild, and the flowers were beautiful, and an Indian friend of ours said it was like we were getting married! Then we visited the extraordinarily ornate and expansive Amber Fort, which was built in the 1500s by a Hindu Raj that had a political alliance with the Muslim Moghul Emperor Akbar. Beyond beautiful! Didn’t think that could be topped, but then we were brought to the City Palace, which was unbelievable in its majesty! Other things that made the trip a super experience were seeing a real snake charmer and having a hands-on interaction with an elephant, which was very weird, very exciting, and a little unnerving! We were definitely in India, far from home! And since we were so far, my wife wanted to go on a tiger safari, which we did at the Ranthambore National Park. We were lucky enough to spot some tigers in their natural environment, and we also saw other wildlife like bears, crocodiles, wild boars, a slew of peacocks and peahens, and other big birds and wildlife! It was all good, and Ashfaq at Dream Day Tours made it all possible for us by coordinating our itinerary, providing us with excellent guides, great hotels (with dinners and breakfasts included most days), and providing us with our beloved driver, Jeetu, who got us to every site and more, and then to the airport in ample time to catch our flight home! Thank you, Dream Day Tours!

Good Experience We had a great experience. My friend and I booked the trip just two weeks before arriving in India, and they responded quickly and made everything possible. We shared what we wanted to see, and they created a plan around it. We also had a fantastic driver who was very kind and always made sure we had everything we needed, including water, soda, and beer.

Saw Tigers and Crocodiles! We did 3 safaris, on the first two we saw lots of wildlife including monkeys, deer, hyenas, peacocks and other birds, but no tigers… And then on the third, we were lucky enough to see on four separate occasions a tiger casually strolling through its natural habitat. We got close enough to take good photos and one even walked straight past the Jeep! We also saw a couple of crocodiles by the lake which topped it off. Very enjoyable experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dev Deepawali, and how is it different from regular Diwali?

Dev Deepawali, meaning “Diwali of the Gods,” is celebrated in Varanasi fifteen days after the main Diwali, on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima. While Diwali is celebrated across homes and cities throughout India, Dev Deepawali is unique to Varanasi’s ghats — thousands of oil lamps are lit along the entire riverfront at once, accompanied by a grand Ganga Aarti, making it one of the most visually spectacular festival nights anywhere in the country.

When is Dev Deepawali in 2026?

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24th November, on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima.

What should we wear for Dev Deepawali night?

Traditional Indian attire is warmly encouraged and adds to the experience, though entirely optional. Comfortable, closed footwear is essential, as the ghats and old city lanes involve a fair amount of walking on stone steps, often in dense crowds.

Is it very crowded during Dev Deepawali?

Yes — this is one of Varanasi’s biggest nights of the year, and the ghats become extremely crowded. We recommend arriving early with your guide to secure a good viewing position, and staying close together as a group

What's the difference between celebrating Diwali at a heritage resort versus with an Indian family?

A heritage resort offers a grand, illuminated celebration with fireworks over historic architecture — a five-star festive atmosphere. Celebrating with an Indian family is more intimate: lighting diyas together, sharing a home-cooked meal, and experiencing the traditions as local households actually observe them. Both are memorable in very different ways, and we’re happy to help you decide.

Can this itinerary be customized?

Yes — hotel categories, added destinations like Ranthambore, and pacing can all be adjusted. Let us know your interests and we’ll tailor the plan accordingly.

Are the domestic flights included in the price?

Yes — Delhi to Varanasi and Varanasi to Jaipur domestic flights are included in this package, based on live availability at the time of booking.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No — it’s closed on Fridays. If your dates include one, we’ll rearrange the itinerary so you don’t miss the visit.

Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?

Yes — the Golden Triangle route combined with Varanasi is one of the most complete introductions to India available, covering history, royal heritage, and living spiritual tradition in one well-paced trip.

Can the driver and guide speak English?

Our drivers understand basic English for everyday communication, and we provide complimentary city guides in major cities. For a fluent English-speaking guide, or guides fluent in French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Russian, or German, we recommend booking in advance at a small extra cost.

Is Varanasi safe and comfortable for first-time visitors, especially during a crowded festival night?

Yes. Varanasi’s old city is dense and sensory even on an ordinary day, and Dev Deepawali night is busier still — but our local guide accompanies you throughout, and your concierge is reachable at any time if you need assistance.

What should we pack for this trip?

Lightweight, breathable clothing, a light layer for cool November evenings, comfortable closed footwear for the ghats and old city lanes, and modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for temple visits. Festive or traditional attire is a lovely addition for Dev Deepawali night.

Do you provide travel insurance?

No, this isn’t included — we’d recommend arranging comprehensive travel insurance, including medical cover, before you depart.

How is Dream Day Tours different from booking through a general travel agent?

We’re a government-approved operator based in Jaipur, with direct, on-ground knowledge of exactly when and where to be for Dev Deepawali, plus established relationships with heritage properties and local families for an authentic Diwali-season celebration — rather than outsourcing to third parties.
