India's Biggest Animal Festival — Camels, Color, Chaos & Devotion in One Unforgettable Week

There are festivals you watch, and there are festivals you find yourself standing inside of, camera forgotten in your hand, simply taking it in. Pushkar Fair is the second kind. Every winter, this small desert town in Rajasthan transforms into the stage for the world’s biggest camel fair — thousands of camels, horses, and cattle arriving with their owners from across the region, alongside a full week of turban-tying competitions, tug-of-war (rassi kud), moustache contests, folk music, and a food competition that pits Indian and international visitors against each other for laughs as much as bragging rights.
What makes Pushkar genuinely different from anywhere else in the world is the sheer texture of it: dust, color, bells, camel bargaining in full swing, and — right in the middle of all that organized chaos — a deeply sacred lakeside town, where the same crowd that was cheering a camel race an hour ago quietly lines the ghats for sunset prayers. This contrast, chaos and devotion sharing the same square kilometre, is exactly why Pushkar has become one of the most sought-after frames for content creators, portrait photographers, and international photojournalists chasing a genuinely iconic shot of India.
It’s worth knowing before you go: the crowd at Pushkar Fair is overwhelmingly Indian, with international travelers still very much in the minority. For many of our guests, that’s precisely the appeal — this isn’t a festival staged for tourists, it’s India’s own celebration, and you’re simply lucky enough to be standing inside it.
Pushkar Camel Fair 2026 — 17th to 24th November 2026, with the spiritual peak falling on Kartik Purnima (the full moon night, when pilgrims bathe in Pushkar Lake). Exact daily programming is confirmed closer to the date by local authorities, but the fairgrounds are active with trading and cultural events throughout this window.

Tour Overview & Itinerary: 6 Days Golden Triangle with Pushkar Fair

This 6-day itinerary covers the complete Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur — before delivering you straight into the heart of Pushkar Fair for two full days. Every stay, drive, and experience is arranged so you arrive at the fairgrounds rested and ready, not travel-worn.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi

A Dream Day Tours representative meets you at the airport for a seamless private transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, explore Old and New Delhi — Jama Masjid, the Red Fort (outside view), India Gate, Qutub Minar, and Humayun’s Tomb. Evening at leisure, or an optional food walk through Old Delhi’s lanes. Overnight in Delhi.

Day 2: Delhi to Agra

Drive to Agra (approx. 3–4 hours). Visit the grand Agra Fort, its Mughal-era palaces and courtyards telling the story of an empire at its peak. As evening arrives, head to Mehtab Bagh for a sunset view of the Taj Mahal from across the river — a quieter, less-crowded vantage point than the main entrance. Overnight in Agra.

Day 3: Agra to Jaipur

An early start for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the marble turns soft shades of pink and gold and the crowds are at their thinnest — one of the most requested experiences on any India tour. Explore Agra’s marble inlay workshops before departing for Jaipur, stopping en route at Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone Mughal city built and abandoned within decades. Arrive in Jaipur by evening. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 4: Jaipur Sightseeing

A morning at Amber Fort, with the option of a jeep ride up to the hilltop entrance. Continue to City Palace, Hawa Mahal (the Palace of Winds), and the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar. In the evening, optional cultural add-ons are available — a traditional dance performance, a cooking class, or dinner with a local family. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 5: Jaipur to Pushkar — Into the Fair

Drive to Pushkar (approx. 3 hours). Begin at the sacred Pushkar Lake and the Brahma Temple, one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, before stepping into the fairgrounds themselves: camel trading in full swing, turban-tying and moustache competitions, folk music and dance performances, and a market alive with handicrafts, textiles, and street food. Stay for sunset over the dunes, camels and traders silhouetted against the sky — a moment photographers travel across the world for. Overnight in Pushkar.

Day 6: Pushkar Fair & Return to Delhi

A final morning at the fair to catch the day’s scheduled events — camel races, camel polo, tug-of-war, or whatever the day’s program brings — plus time to browse Pushkar’s colorful bazaars for souvenirs. Depart for Delhi in the afternoon for your onward journey, or extend your stay with one of our optional add-ons.

Note: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays – itinerary is adjusted automatically if your dates fall on  a Friday.

  • Modest dress is expected at religious sites — shoulders and knees covered for both men and women
  • Leather goods and food items are not permitted inside the Taj Mahal complex
  • Pushkar Fair grounds get genuinely crowded and dusty — travel light, stay hydrated, and wear comfortable, closed footwear
  • Photography is welcomed and encouraged across the fairgrounds, but always ask permission before photographing local people up close

Dream Day Tours Golden Triangle and Tiger Safari Tour is definitely worth booking! Review of Dream Day Tours - Golden Triangle plus Tiger Safari Tour This past June my wife and I traveled to India with one of my wife’s colleagues to visit her husband’s hometown in Assam, India. It was great seeing a part of India from the perspective of a family that lived there, but since this was my wife’s first time to India, we decided to book a tour to show her some other beautiful sites. And so, we booked a lovely tour through Dream Day Tours, which is based in Jaipur. It was called the Golden Triangle Tour with Tiger Safari. It was just the two of us on the tour, so Dream Day Tours catered everything to our needs and desires. To begin, we flew into Delhi and Dream Day arranged for a driver to bring us from the airport to the Welcomehotel by ITC in Dwarka. Excellent hotel with very good food. The next day, we started our tour with the driver that was assigned to us, Jeetu Singh. Jeetu was great and transported us to our various destinations for the entire tour. We were also provided with a local guide for Delhi, Aarif Sheikh. Aarif was an excellent guide. He gave us a lot of historical and cultural information and took us to Jama Masjid, which was a spectacular mosque built in the time of the Mughals in the 1600’s, and still used for prayer today. We also got a bicycle rickshaw ride in Chandni Chowk, which is a lively and colorful market nearby. We were also taken to a grand Sikh Temple and learned of the generosity of the Sikh’s to their pilgrims and temple visitors. We appreciated the visits to the monuments and museums that were made around the life and death of Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi. The next morning Jeetu brought us to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. We were met there by our guide Vipin. The Taj is spectacular, and basically was the only site we visited in Agra. Vipin brought us to various places to see the Taj under different views and at sunrise and sunset. We had total access to the Taj and its grounds, and Vipin, an amateur photographer took many beautiful and romantic photos of us with the Taj as a background. In fact, he took such a beautiful photo of us that we both use it as our most recent FB profile page. He definitely has talent as a photographer! On our way from Agra to Jaipur, Jeetu had us visit Fatehpur Sikri, which was the capital of the Mughal empire under Emperor Akbar in the 1500’s. This was certainly worth the visit. And we also stopped at a step well, which was a structure that was used historically to provide water to the inhabitants of the area. It was really different, fascinating, and ingenious! In Jaipur, the Pink City, we were again provided with a guide that was very versed in Indian culture and history, Mr. Raghuveer. He immediately brought us the Hawa Mahal, or Wind Palace, which is an incredibly beautiful structure overlooking a large busy square. We were again brought there by the Dream Day Tours owner, Ashfaq, in the evening, to see its beauty at night. Phenomenal! We had stressed that, besides seeing traditional tourist sites, we wanted to get an experience that showed us some of what really goes on in Jaipur streets, so Mr. Raghuveer took us to the flower market, where we were showered with flowers. This seemed especially appropriate for us since we had just celebrated our 40th anniversary. It was wild, and the flowers were beautiful, and an Indian friend of ours said it was like we were getting married! Then we visited the extraordinarily ornate and expansive Amber Fort, which was built in the 1500s by a Hindu Raj that had a political alliance with the Muslim Moghul Emperor Akbar. Beyond beautiful! Didn’t think that could be topped, but then we were brought to the City Palace, which was unbelievable in its majesty! Other things that made the trip a super experience were seeing a real snake charmer and having a hands-on interaction with an elephant, which was very weird, very exciting, and a little unnerving! We were definitely in India, far from home! And since we were so far, my wife wanted to go on a tiger safari, which we did at the Ranthambore National Park. We were lucky enough to spot some tigers in their natural environment, and we also saw other wildlife like bears, crocodiles, wild boars, a slew of peacocks and peahens, and other big birds and wildlife! It was all good, and Ashfaq at Dream Day Tours made it all possible for us by coordinating our itinerary, providing us with excellent guides, great hotels (with dinners and breakfasts included most days), and providing us with our beloved driver, Jeetu, who got us to every site and more, and then to the airport in ample time to catch our flight home! Thank you, Dream Day Tours!

Better than we could have imagined! This was the most well organised trip we could have asked for! Ashfaq and the team couldn't have done more to make the trip better - hotel was stunning, lifts to and from Safari on time (and aircon!) and the best Safari, 2 groups and 1 private ( we saw 7 Tigers). This was a trip tailored to us, made very special! Highly recommend Dream Day Tours if you want the best trip of a life time at a great price!

Good Experience We had a great experience. My friend and I booked the trip just two weeks before arriving in India, and they responded quickly and made everything possible. We shared what we wanted to see, and they created a plan around it. We also had a fantastic driver who was very kind and always made sure we had everything we needed, including water, soda, and beer.

Saw Tigers and Crocodiles! We did 3 safaris, on the first two we saw lots of wildlife including monkeys, deer, hyenas, peacocks and other birds, but no tigers… And then on the third, we were lucky enough to see on four separate occasions a tiger casually strolling through its natural habitat. We got close enough to take good photos and one even walked straight past the Jeep! We also saw a couple of crocodiles by the lake which topped it off. Very enjoyable experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Pushkar Camel Fair in 2026?

The Pushkar Camel Fair 2026 is expected to run from 17th to 24th November, with the spiritual peak on Kartik Purnima, the full moon night when pilgrims bathe in Pushkar Lake. Exact daily programming is confirmed closer to the date.

Is the Pushkar Fair mostly attended by international tourists?

No — the crowd is overwhelmingly Indian, with international visitors still a small minority. This is a genuine, living Indian festival rather than a tourist-oriented event, which is exactly what many of our guests find so compelling about it.

What actually happens at the fair, day to day?

Expect a mix of livestock trading, camel and horse races, camel polo, turban-tying and moustache competitions, tug-of-war (rassi kud), folk music and dance performances, food competitions, and sacred rituals at Pushkar Lake — the exact daily schedule is set by local authorities and released close to the event.

Is Pushkar Fair a good destination for photographers and content creators?

Yes — the combination of dust, color, animals, sacred rituals, and golden desert light makes it one of the most photogenic festivals in India. Sunrise and sunset at the fairgrounds and the lake ghats are particularly popular windows for iconic shots.

Is it appropriate to photograph people at the fair?

Photography is welcomed across the fairgrounds, but we always advise asking permission before taking close-up portraits of local people, out of courtesy and respect.

How crowded and physically demanding is the fair?

Very crowded, dusty, and often warm during the day — comfortable closed footwear, light layers, and a refillable water bottle are essential. The fairgrounds involve a fair amount of walking on sand.

How crowded and phyaCan I add a tiger safari at Ranthambore to this itinerary?sically demanding is the fair?

Yes — a Ranthambore extension is one of our most popular add-ons to this route. Let us know when booking and we’ll build it into your itinerary.

What is the Golden Triangle tour of India?

Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur — India’s three most visited cities — form the Golden Triangle circuit. This tour combines all three with an extension to Pushkar for the fair.

Which month is best to visit the Golden Triangle in India?

October to March, during the winter season, offers the most comfortable weather for sightseeing. Pushkar Fair itself falls within this window, making November an especially good time to combine both.

Can the driver speak English?

Our drivers understand basic English for everyday communication, and we provide complimentary city guides in major cities. For a fluent English-speaking guide, or guides fluent in French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Russian, or German, we recommend booking in advance at a small extra cost.

Does the driver know all the sightseeing spots?

Yes — all our drivers are well-versed in the entire region and knowledgeable about the attractions along this route.

Can this itinerary be customized?

Yes — hotel categories, added destinations (Ranthambore, Udaipur, Mandawa), and pacing can all be adjusted. Tell us what matters most to you and we’ll tailor the plan.
